Life of Purpose Treatment and The Office of Substance Misuse and Mental Health Recovery Research are excited to announce the speakers and sponsors of this year’s University of North Texas Recovery Conference. Held in conjunction with National Recovery Month, the conference will take place September 21 and 22, 2016 at the University of North Texas.

The two-day conference includes a VIP dinner the evening before to welcome speakers and conference attendees to the event. Mr. Earl Hightower is scheduled to address VIP dinner attendees. With over 32 years of experience as an interventionist, Mr. Hightower is the 2013 recipient of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy’s Champion of Recovery Award and a 2014 Keynote Speaker at Congressman Hal Roger’s 3rd Annual Rx Drug Abuse Summit.

“This year’s event is more than just another behavioral health conference,” said Life of Purpose Treatment CEO and Founder, Andrew Burki, MSW. “The 4th Annual University of North Texas Recovery Conference benefits the recently established Office of Substance Misuse and Mental Health Recovery Research. May 6, 2013 - NADCP CEO West Huddleston joined ONDCP Director Kerlikowske, Matthew Perry and Earl Hightower for a lengthy roundtable discussion with senior White House staff in the Roosevelt Room of the West Wing. The NADCP coalition briefed key members of the White House staff on the efficacy of Drug Courts across the country, outlined the need for expansion of Drug, DWI and Veterans Treatment Courts and demonstrated how Drug Courts are on the front lines of the battle against prescription drug abuse.

"We shared with senior White House staff that Drug Courts are the most successful program in our nation’s history for reducing drug abuse, crime and recidivism while saving money for taxpayers,” said Huddleston. “There is immense support for Drug Courts and Veterans Treatment Courts within the Administration and our meeting today was an important opportunity to discuss the policy needed to continue their expansion throughout the country.”

Kerlikowske lauded Perry and Hightower for “giving voice to the millions of people in recovery” and thanked them for being living proof that every person is capable of overcoming substance abuse. Matthew Perry and Earl Hightower have made an immeasurable contribution to this effort. Director Kerlikowske noted that they have helped lift the stigma associated with addiction and remove barriers that too many Americans face in entering recovery. All Rise Ambassador Matthew Perry and NADCP Board Member Earl Hightower were honored Monday during a special ceremony at the White House for their longstanding advocacy for recovery and Drug Courts. White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) Director Gil Kerlikowske named both Perry and Hightower a ‘Champion of Recovery’ before numerous senior White House Staff.

“During my darkest times, I never could have imagined receiving an award at the White House,” said Perry. “I am deeply humbled by this honor.” Later in the day, ONDCP published a post to their blog authored by Perry. In it he writes, “I know firsthand how difficult and painful addiction can be – I’ve lived through it. Now I’m proud to be in long-term recovery from addiction, and I’m proud to be an advocate for a program that’s finally breaking the vicious cycle of addiction, arrest, and incarceration.”
