The retiring “baby-boomer” population is entering treatment for addiction and alcoholism at a higher rates than the rest of the population. It is expected that the number of seniors with drug and alcohol problems will increase by 150 percent by 2020, from 1.7 million in 2001 to 4.4 million in 2020 according to an article published in the New York Times in March of 2008.
There are many reasons for this increase including the fact that baby-booomers were the first generation to openly use a variety of addictive drugs recreationally. They were also the first generation to have a wide variety of potentially abusable prescription medications and painkillers readily available and the last generation that seeking treatment and recovery were not socially acceptable.
A new approach to treating and a much higher level of medical intervention is required for older addicts and alcoholics. At Hightower Intervention Services we have the experience to tailor the treatment options to the individual’s needs.
